Romana Kryzanowska and Ron Fletcher.
Both played important roles in carrying the Pilates Method into a new generation—but they did so in distinctly different ways.
Romana Kryzanowska became one of the great guardians of Joseph Pilates’ work. After Joe's death in 1967, Romana returned to the New York studio and became its director in 1970. With tremendous energy, precision, and passion, she devoted her career to preserving and teaching the method she had learned from Joe and Clara. Her influence helped establish the Classical Pilates tradition that continues around the world today.
Ron Fletcher trained with both Joe and Clara, with Clara becoming an especially important influence on his approach to the work. Her patient, thoughtful teaching encouraged him to slow down, feel the movement, and explore the experience behind each exercise. With Clara's blessing, Ron opened his own studio in Los Angeles in 1971.
There, Fletcher carried the Pilates Method in a different direction. He built upon the original work, developing his own approach to breath, movement, rhythm, precision, and cueing—including his distinctive Percussive Breathing technique. His work became one of the major bridges between the original New York Pilates studio and the growing movement community on the West Coast.
Heidi Miller is a master Pilates teacher with 30 years of experience teaching movement and nearly 25 years devoted to Classical Pilates. A 2005 graduate of The Pilates Center in Boulder, Colorado, Heidi brings a deep curiosity about the history of the Pilates Method—and a passion for understanding how the work was taught, preserved, and evolved by the teachers who carried Joseph and Clara Pilates’ legacy forward.
Throughout her career, Heidi has sought out opportunities to learn from exceptional teachers, including Pat Guyton, Gary Calderone, Mejo Wiggins, Darien Gold, and Kathi Ross-Nash. She continues to deepen her historical study through Archival Pilates, exploring original materials, exercises, photographs, films, and teachings connected to Joseph Pilates and his work.
In this two-day workshop, Heidi brings these two remarkable perspectives together.
You'll experience the Classical Pilates Mat series through the lens of Ron Fletcher on Day One and Romana Kryzanowska on Day Two, exploring historical exercises, cues, imagery, rhythm, breath, and teaching approaches associated with each lineage.
The exercises may be familiar—but the experience of them may be very different. Rather than simply talking about Pilates history, you'll experience that history in your own body and discover how two influential teachers could take the same foundational work and illuminate it in different ways.
Day One — The West: Ron Fletcher
Explore the Classical Mat through Fletcher's approach to breath, precision, rhythm, intention, and movement.
Day Two — The East: Romana Kryzanowska
Return to the Classical Mat through Romana's dynamic, energetic approach and her commitment to preserving Joe's original method.
By experiencing the two approaches back-to-back, you'll have a rare opportunity to feel their similarities, discover their differences, and better understand how both helped shape the Pilates we practice today.
Join Heidi for East Meets West—a hands-on exploration of Pilates history, lineage, and movement.
